About Dr. Diaz
Dr. Diaz is a board certified general adult psychiatrist who specializes in treating patients with mental health conditions. He graduated from medical school in Memphis and then completed a four year residency training program in psychiatry at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Diaz then completed a one year fellowship training program in addiction psychiatry at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. He has provided psychiatric care to patients at medical facilities, inpatient psychiatric units, intensive outpatient programs, and outpatient clinics. Dr. Diaz provides evidence based treatment for substance use disorders, including Suboxone. In addition to medication management, he has experience with various psychotherapeutic techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, supportive psychotherapy, group therapy, and motivational interviewing. Dr. Diaz is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, and the Tennessee Medical Association. Vanderbilt University Medical Center
Completed an addiction psychiatry fellowship program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Increased knowledge and expertise in using medications to treat opioid use disorder such as buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone. Experience with treating pregnant, medically complicated, HIV+, and diverse patients in various levels of care. Provided addiction and mental health treatment recommendations to patients hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Hospital. Treated patients at an inpatient unit that was dedicated to co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders and medication assisted detoxification. Evaluated patients who were enrolled in an intensive outpatient program and led a recovery focused group. Provided medication management and supportive psychotherapy to patients in multiple outpatient addiction and psychiatry clinics. Lectured medical students on various topics related to addiction psychiatry such as motivational interviewing and how substance use can impact the developing brain.

Completed a four year general adult psychiatry residency training program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. Training sites included a federal government hospital, a state psychiatric hospital, a free standing private psychiatric hospital, and multiple outpatient psychiatry clinics. The first year consisted of a mixture of internal medicine, neurology, and psychiatry. The last three years consisted of psychiatry rotations in general adult psychiatry and multiple psychiatry subspecialities such as child & adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and addiction psychiatry. Received training in interventional psychiatry procedures such as electroconvulsive therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation. Lectured medical students on topics related to general adult psychiatry and led a psychiatry clerkship review course. Completed and successfully passed all the exams required by the United States Medical Licensing Examination. Obtained an unrestricted Tennessee medical license and DEA license.

Completed the requirements necessary to receive a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. This included two years of preclinical courses followed by two years of clinical clerkships in pediatrics, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, surgery, psychiatry, and neurology. Assisted with basic science research that examined the correlation between psychosocial stressors and psychiatric disorders. Received a psychiatry clerkship award at graduation for demonstrating clinical interest and academic achievements in psychiatry.

Obtained a bachelors of arts degree in natural sciences from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Completed premedical course work in biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and the related lab work for each. Completed advanced coursework in genetics, developmental biology, reproductive endocrinology, and biochemistry. Assisted with basic science research that examined the relationship between epigenetic changes and HIV associated dementia.
